Two Ten Mobilizes to Respond to Hurricane Beryl
Tuesday, July 30, 2024
Two Ten received more than 500 applications for disaster relief after Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas earlier this month. Within days we’d made $260,000 in emergency financial assistance available to 360 footwear employees – funds to help them with the expenses of evacuating flooded neighborhoods, finding temporary housing for their families or making emergency home repairs, and, perhaps most critical, restocking groceries and medications that were lost to flooding or went bad during the extended power outages that followed the Category 5 storm.
We’ve helped footwear employees from Foot Locker, Finish Line, Skechers, Shoe Carnival, Steve Madden, DSW, ALDO, City Gear, Famous Footwear, and dozens of other companies.
Here are just some of the stories shared by those who’ve been impacted by this disaster:
"I live in a first-floor apartment and during Hurricane Beryl water started to rush into my unit over night. When the power went out we lost all our groceries and it felt like 100 degrees in our home with no air conditioning. But we were forced to stay because we have no family in Texas and could not afford a hotel."
"I am facing significant hardship due to Hurricane Beryl. As a result of the storm, I am without a job because my workplace still has no power. My home has lost both power and water. We have no more food in the house; it's all gone bad with the refrigerator not running. We have three babies and two pregnant ladies in the house and these circumstances make it difficult to manage daily life and responsibilities."
"Hurricane Beryl hit our city and wiped out most of the power in Houston and Harris county, including our home. We don’t have electricity or water currently, not since the hurricane hit. We have also not been able to work because our job sites are without power as well. So we've lost income, too."
"Due to Hurricane Beryl we lost power for a prolonged period of time. All our food had to be thrown away for safety. I really need help getting groceries to replace everything that went bad."
"I lost wages due to Hurricane Beryl because there was no power at work plus I lost food because we had no power at home for four days."
"Hurricane Beryl left my household without power or water for days and due to the electricity outage I also lost wages because the store was shut down for days. This has led to a major food shortage for my family."
"Lost power at home and food was spoiled. Wasn't able to get gas for the car so couldn't get medications and wasn't able to go to work either."
"Hurricane Beryl took out all electrical lines in my area, including service to my house, and also disrupted our water as well as our power. My family has suffered with no electricity and no water for the past four days, and there's no estimate of when service will be restored. Our food has spoiled, we’re not able to take showers nor wash or dry our clothes, .we’ve been struggling to sleep comfortably in this heat, and all our workplaces are closed down so we do not have income coming in at the moment either."
