When Everything Changes Overnight: Jennifer’s Story

Sometimes, a freak accident when you least expect it can turn stability into chaos in a matter of minutes.
When her home's electrical panel suddenly burst into flames this past spring, Jennifer Lemmer never could have imagined the lasting impact it would have on her family.
The fire sent dangerous carcinogens through the home's HVAC system, contaminating the entire house. Within hours, Jennifer, her husband, and their four children were forced to evacuate while the home was gutted and repaired to make it safe to live in again. Everything from the flooring and appliances to the HVAC system and electrical wiring had to be stripped out and replaced.
Jennifer, who manages a Stuart Weitzman store, described feeling completely blindsided by the sudden loss.
"I've never been through anything like this before," Jennifer said a few weeks after the incident. "To go from having everything you need to having nothing you need in a matter of hours is just so overwhelming."
In an instant, questions flooded her mind. Where would her family sleep? How would they replace clothing and shoes when everything in their home had been contaminated? What would they eat now that all the food in their refrigerator had been lost?
“You don't quite know what is happening,” Jennifer said. “It's so overwhelming. You're just like a deer in headlights. I've heard people say that before, and I've never experienced it until this. You're like, ‘What am I supposed to do? What do I need to do?’”
While her insurance would cover most of the repair and relocation costs, Jennifer was still responsible for a significant deductible and the immediate expenses of replacing clothing, food, and other essentials.
After her company's HR manager connected her with Two Ten, Jennifer received an emergency hardship grant from Two Ten. The grant helped her purchase the necessities her family needed without the added burden of worrying about how they would afford them.
Looking back, Jennifer says she was deeply moved by both the speed of the support and the kindness she experienced.
"My husband and I have always been the ones being kind to others,” she said. “We've never been the ones receiving the kindness. When you're in such a place of deficit, every single kind word or kind action that is shown is so huge ... There's just no value on it when you're in such a hard, hard place.”
