Hurricane Sandy Appeal: Helping those families in crisis.

As of November 13 Two Ten has delivered over $110,000 in emergency relief aid alone; sent to footwear families affected by catastrophic events related to Hurricane Sandy.  Unfortunately, though the storm has passed, thousands are still struggling to find light, heat, food and dry clothes and calls are coming in greater numbers.  Please consider giving to the Hurricane Sandy Appeal so that we can continue to provide so many with basic necessities.

Two Ten Footwear Foundation has been working overtime to meet the emergency relief needs of footwear families in the NYC and New Jersey area due to Hurricane Sandy.

“From 1 to 10, Sandy is an 11. Even with FEMA and the Red Cross and the other agencies that have been on the ground, we’ve had 360 footwear families contact us so far. We’ve brought on additional help and expanded hours so we can be available to our footwear colleagues who are living without heat or power, in temporary accommodation or with family members. The horror stories we’ve heard, and continue to hear every day, are devastating. People without insurance. Their homes in complete ruin,” says Neal Newman, President.

“People are in dire need of assistance. Everyone should do what they can to help our own. I’m delighted to support Two Ten and help as many footwear families get back on their feet,” says Martin Berman, Two Ten Board member and Managing Director, Micro-Pak Ltd., who provided a $25,000 donation to the Two Ten Foundation Hurricane Sandy Appeal.

“This is what we do at Two Ten Footwear Foundation. It’s what makes the footwear industry so special and I’m proud to be apart of Two Ten’s efforts,” says Board member and Hurricane Sandy Appeal donor Danny Schwartz, CEO, Schwartz and Benjamin, Inc.

Fred-Bloom-memoriam

Remembering Fred Bloom, aka “Mr. Two Ten,” Longtime social activist

and Two Ten family member.

Frederick Bloom, of Walpole MA. died on October 31, 2012

Fred was a loving husband and father who was committed to the betterment of the human condition.  He was extremely active in many communities throughout his life but for those of us in the footwear family, he will be fondly remembered as an icon of Two Ten Footwear Foundation.

He was born in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood and attended Boston Latin School and then Brown University where he was later appointed to the Board of Trustees.  After graduation, he joined the Signal Corps at the onset of World War II.  He was trained in cryptanalysis (code breaking), eventually leading numerous top-secret projects in the Aleutian Islands.

Upon his return from the war, he joined his father, Abe Bloom, at Two Ten Footwear Foundation in the role of Executive Secretary and dedicated his life to helping people in the footwear community through financial, social, and educational support and services.  One of his many major accomplishments was the addition of the Two Ten Scholarship Program, which has helped thousands of students since its inception in 1969.

For over forty years, he was Two Ten’s footwear “historian.” He kept precise scrapbooks, detailing important events and changes to the Foundation and industry.  His memory was incredible, storing an archive of industry information in his personal memory bank which he drew from when telling captivating, fact-filled stories as he inspired people with the mission of Two Ten.

“Fred Bloom will be missed but long remembered.  He was special among men and special to the industry; a blessing to Two Ten and the personification of  Shoepeople helping Shoepeople.” –  Mary Hehir, Assistant to the President, Two Ten.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Edith Bloom, of 56 years, David W. Bloom of New York, NY, Jeff A. Bloom of Toronto, Canada, and Linda B. Ambrose of Annapolis, MD. Cherished grandfather to Joshua Dillon Bloom and dear brother to the late Herbert W. and Myron L. Bloom.

Mary HehirExecutive Assistant

Mary had retired in 2000 after a long and successful career in academia.  She was looking forward to the down time.  But “after two months of hearing the refrigerator hum, I said I have to get out of here!”  She interviewed with Fred Bloom, heard the passion in his voice, and decided on the spot to take the job.

Mary has been a dedicated Two Ten employee ever since, serving as Executive Assistant to the President.  She has seen a good amount change in the last 13 years and probably has built up as much passion for Two Ten’s mission as anyone, including Fred Bloom.  “We do more, and serve more, with less people because we have a wonderful staff and the technology to communicate well.”

She has the strong love and support of her devoted husband Joe (of 45 years!) and their three sons.  She is also is a passionate Patriots fan whose Monday morning mood is often dependant on events from the day before. Luckily for us, it’s the Pats so she is usually her normal, amazing self.

“What do you talk about with Steve Madden, Kenneth Cole and Aldo Bensadoun over a lunch of clams casino, shrimp and bruschetta? Tennis. Golf. Politics. Children. Family. And of course shoes and the incredible legacy of footwear philanthropy in the USA. What an enjoyable and memorable experience it was.”

– Neal Newman, Two Ten President

Two Ten Footwear Foundation President Neal Newman had the pleasure of dining at a New York restaurant with major footwear power players Steve Madden, Kenneth Cole and Aldo Bensadoun. Look for the executives to make an appearance in a special video at the upcoming Two Ten Annual Dinner to be held Nov. 28.
